S is for Strong, Steady & Straight

In 2018 the Royal Osteoporosis Society published Strong, Steady and Straight, an expert consensus statement on physical activity and exercise for osteoporosis. This has been embraced by fitness professionals as the way forward for those with osteoporosis.

These are the recommendations I follow in class to adapt the Pilates exercises to make them effective at promoting bone growth.

The 3 themes are:

Strong to promote bone growth.

Steady to reduce falls and thus falling fractures

Straight to promote improving posture and thus protect the spine from fractures.

I’ve elected to incorporate these themes into all my classes rather than create specific classes for bone health as I believe they are themes everyone can benefit from.
